Lesson 2: Read to Me! Using iPods and GarageBand in the Language Arts classroom (Podcasts)
Objective:
Students will increase reading fluency level and reading comprehension. Students will learn how to produce a Podcast using editing techniques and musical content.
Materials:
Computer with Internet access
iPod, voice recorder app or microphone, GarageBand
Curricular literature or reading selection
Procedure:
Students will choose a reading selection from literature resource. Depending on whether they work individually or in groups, students will read and record a selection using the microphone/voice recorder application from the iPod. When the students complete their portion, they will import this into GarageBand. Students will then edit our flaws (pauses, umms, etc.) and continue to refine and polish the selection. Voice intonation, character development, clear speech, pacing and fluency will be critiqued by peers and teacher. Finished work will be recorded as Podcast for classroom website resources.
Chaptering – Students will each take a full chapter of a literature piece and will create their own podcast selection. When they are completed, they will be compiled as complete Podcast of the book.
Differentiated strategies – Students will rewrite the story and record their own endings, in their own words.
Reflection Exercise for students: · Were you able to read faster or follow along better after project was edited by peers? · Did you understand the story better after doing this? · Was the choice of music appropriate for the story? · What would you do differently · Did working in GarageBand help you self-edit flaws and refine the Podcast?
Standards:
ISTE Standards: 2 – Communication and Collaboration, 4 – Critical Thinking, 5 – Digital Citizenship
